This textbook, written by Turkish calligrapher Omer Faruk Dere, is based on work of renowned Ottoman calligrapher Mehmet Izzet Efendi whose ruq’a is often considered gold-standard for the script.
Though the book is written in Turkish, the main part presenting the letters is based on pictures and can be followed easily even by those who do not speak Turkish.
After brief introduction to the script and tools used in Arabic calligraphy, the book presents individual letters in all their forms (isolated, beginning, middle, end of the word) and finally, examples of Izzet Efendi’s work as well as mashq (copy book) of another great ruq’a calligrapher – Mustafa Halim Özyazıcı (Halim Efendi). The final section is ideal for learning how to connect letters.
